Why is it important to read to our children in Spanish?

Reading is a powerful practice that can promote the development of your child's language skills and critical thinking abilities. By reading to children, it is possible to stimulate their imagination and creativity while also increasing their vocabulary knowledge and awareness about important issues and concepts around them.

While it is important to read to your children in ALL the languages they speak, we recognize that accessing Spanish children's books is not particularly easy. In schools,  your child will have access to English books and literacy skills and most often, Spanish literacy is not at all nurtured. Therefore, we encourage you to promote Spanish literacy in your home! By doing so, you will expose your child to Spanish input that will stimulate their Spanish language development and maintenance.

• The more and the earlier you expose your child to a language, the higher the proficiency they are likely to achieve.
• Children need lots of input in the target language and in various modes.

Reading is not something that should be imposed on children, but rather it is important to find a book and topic that captures their attention and that is appropriate for their age.
